VMWare virtual appliances maintenance dropped
Over the week-end, while struggling to install VMWare Workstation 7 on Ubuntu Studio 9.10, I decided that I will no longer update the Ubuntu and CentOS minimal virtual appliances.
I'm a bit frustrated right now against VMWare. I'm a paying customer since VMWare Workstation 5 and, every time a new version of Ubuntu is out, I have to struggle with VMWare to make it work with the latest linux kernel drivers. The worst is not that I have to find a patch on an obscure forum somewhere and just hope it work. No.
What's make me really mad is the fact that I paid for a product that I can't use on Ubuntu because I want to use the latest and greatest kernel!
That's enough! I'm done throwing money at VMWare. I already switched to VirtualBox for my virtualization needs. You know what? May be VirtualBox is less feature complete than VMWare Workstation but actually it works on Ubuntu! I don't have to patch anything to make it work. Also, it's Open Source and free.
I'm sorry for those who use my VM's and were expecting a new update. I will continue to offer the Virtual Appliances for download on Symbiosoft.net but they will not be updated anymore.
Feel free to update them yourself and provide an update on your website if you want. I will be happy to assist you with the startup scripts.
